A big win for Sioux Looks Out for PAWS Animal Rescue (PAWS) thanks to the Sioux Lookout Women’s Hockey League and everyone who attended their home tournament Feb. 27 to March 1.
Entry fees collected at the door during the tournament totaled $750 and the decision was made to donate that money to PAWS.
Ashley Herfst and Kara Carter co-coordinated the tournament.
Herfst shared, “My partner took in two cats from PAWS and they are amazing and we both have such a soft spot for animals, and rescue, and the work they do, so we thought PAWS would be the perfect organization to give it to.”
PAWS representative Gisele Southwell said, “It was a very nice surprise for us to receive this donation. We’re so grateful to the Women’s Hockey League for donating. It’s going to go towards animal vet care. We vet all the animals that come into care immediately upon their surrender or their rescue so that we ensure their health, so we always carry a vet bill, so that’s where it is going to go.”
Southwell said the organization is in need of volunteers and is struggling to find them. She said that in addition to adult care volunteers, “We have a couple different areas where we can also use volunteers, always fundraising, always travel - drivers to Dryden to take animals to vet care, and then we need people that can stock shelves and purchase items at the store if we need them. So, there’s a variety of areas that we can use people in, it’s finding those people. So currently, we’re putting a shout out for hopefully extra volunteers to stand up and come out.”
Anyone who can help out is encouraged to message Sioux Looks Out for PAWS Animal Rescue on their Facebook page.
“Just message us and one of the coordinators will get in touch,” Southwell said.
PAWS representatives Jennifer Jackobsen added, “I just want to thank the bylaw officers here in town because we work with them. A lot of the animals that we do rescue come in through our bylaw officers or even if they don’t end up in our care, the bylaw officers work with us very, very well in taking care of all of those animals at the shelter.”
