Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo MP, Kenora—Kiiwetinoong
Dear Constituents
Over the past two weeks, my focus has remained on making sure northwestern Ontario’s voice is being heard in Parliament. I was also happy to have some time at home meeting residents of our region. In Red Lake, I had the honour of attending this year’s Remembrance Day ceremony. It’s always sobering to reflect and mourn the countless men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces who sacrificed so much to keep our nation strong and free. I’m also thankful to have had the opportunity to speak with so many important individuals at the Legion who make these events possible.
In Ottawa, I had the pleasure of meeting with representatives of the Canadian Construction Association to talk about issues that are not just local, but countrywide. With the cost of materials rising and projects across Canada facing delay, the message was clear — Canada needs an affordable plan to put shovels in the ground. Under the Liberals, construction has slowed to a halt. Compared to last year when housing starts were already insufficient, starts have now cratered 35% throughout Ontario. From local infrastructure to housing and major national projects, Liberal taxes and red tape have halted our critical construction industry. Conservatives will continue advocating for a plan that lowers taxes, brings down the cost of building, and provides certainty on projects so Canadian workers can get to work building Canada.
I was proud to stand with my Conservative colleagues to vote against the costly Liberal budget. However, it narrowly passed the House of Commons. This new budget brings $90 billion more in spending and a $62 billion deficit. What Canadians needed was a plan focused on lowering the cost of living and making life affordable, but instead, the Liberals are saddling our future generations with an insurmountable level of new debt. We’ll continue to fight for an affordable life for Canadians and work towards tackling inflation and unnecessary taxes.
This upcoming weekend, I’m excited to partake in Kenora’s Miracle Marathon and the Salvation Army’s 130th anniversary here in the region. I invite all who are able to take some time and donate — be it money, toys, or non-perishable foods — to help make the Christmas season a little brighter for those who are struggling.
