Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones: Get Vaccinated for Flu, COVID-19 and RSV
Northwestern Health Unit - Special to The Bulletin
Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) has confirmed the first cases of influenza in our region. “Annual influenza (flu) and COVID-19 vaccines, with the most up to date strains, is your best defense against severe illness and can prevent unnecessary visits to the hospital”, says Shannon Brown, Program Manager.
“Both vaccines are recommended for people 6 months of age and older.” It is safe to get them together at the same appointment.
The Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine is also available to everyone 75 years of age and some adults ages 60-74 who meet high risk criteria. The RSV vaccine is a one-time dose; if you have already received it, you don’t need another one.
You can book your vaccine appointment at participating pharmacies, health care providers or visit NWHU – Book a Fall Vaccine Appointment (https://www.nwhu.on.ca/our-services/vaccines-and-immunizations/book-a-fall-vaccine-appointment/).
NWHU expects flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines will be available in the region by mid-October. High dose flu vaccine for people 65 years of age and older will only be available while supplies last. In Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances, the high-dose flu vaccine will only be available at pharmacies or from your health care provider. If the high-dose flu vaccine is not available, eligible individuals are encouraged to receive a standard-dose flu vaccine rather than delaying vaccination.
By staying up to date with vaccines and choosing to stay home if feeling unwell, we can reduce severe illness and reduce the strain on local healthcare systems.
