A Day for Truth and Reconciliation
On Sept. 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, staff and students from Sioux North High School and Sioux Mountain Public School took part in a walk to honour Residential School victims, survivors, and their families. The walk was hosted by the Sioux North Cultural Committee in partnership with NGFC (Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre), ONWA (Ontario Native Women’s Association), and SWAC (Sunset Women’s Aboriginal Circle). Following the walk, staff and students posed for a group photo.
The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board shared that afterwards, staff and students returned to their schools to participate in interactive cultural activities, such as making mini-drums, small orange shirts, medicine bags, birchbark biting, and more.
