Sioux Hudson Entertainment Series kicks off new season
The Sioux Hudson Entertainment Series Committee enjoyed presenting their first show of the season, featuring Canadian Rock band - The Trews. John Angus, Colin MacDonald and Jack Syperek, lit up the stage from the moment this acoustic trio picked up their guitars, straight through to the resounding applause prompting their multi-song encore at the end of the evening. Their first hit single, “Not Ready To Go,” was a fitting anthem to end on, and was a sentiment shared by all in attendance.
Originally formed in the town of Antigonish, The Trews have shared the stage with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant and Guns’n Roses, and have earned a place in their own right, as one of “Canada’s best live bands,” and “veteran rockers, not to be missed.” Many Canadians would remember the “stand-alone single, “Highway of Heroes,” written for a schoolmate of the band’s, Nichola Goddard, where all of the proceeds from the single went to the Canadian Hero Fund charity.
During the performance, The Trews reminded us that October 17th, was the 5th year Anniversary of [the passing of] Gord Downie, lead singer from the Tragically Hip, and well known for his work with the Wenjack family and in memory of Chanie Wenjack, as the centre of Downie’s Secret Path project. The Trews performed a song that has never been released, nor played live, inspired by and in honour of their musical colleague and his work.
The committee were thrilled to see a full house, and shared the same appreciation expressed by the band, around the energy and receptivity of the audience. It made it a great night out for everyone involved. We saw people from all ages and “walks of life,” in attendance, with a group of Sioux Mountain students enjoying the show, as part of a performing arts school excursion, with teachers in tow, who chaperoned and made it happen.
Through the support of government grants from the Ontario Arts Council, Canadian Heritage and the Ontario Dances Program, along with generous sponsorships from local individuals, businesses and organizations, not to mention audience members who show up and buy tickets, the committee are able to do what we love, bringing professional artists and audiences together, allowing a special place for the performing arts to thrive. We couldn’t do what we do without the cafetorium space in the Sioux North High School and express gratitude for the staff and students supporting us in our efforts.
Our next performance at Sioux North High School is scheduled for Thursday November 17th, featuring Ballet Kelowna. Doors open at 7:00 pm., and the shows begin promptly at 7:30. Because of the new stage, we are not only able to present modern dance, but this is the first time we will be able to present ballet. Please be sure to find out more about this performance and others on our website: siouxhudsonentertainmentseries.ca/ and find us on social media, e.g., Facebook and Instagram, for more information and updates. Season Subscription passes and single tickets are available on Eventbrite in advance, as well as on the evening of all of the performances, at the door. We look forward to seeing you!
