Remembrance Day in Sioux Lookout, 2022
By Dick MacKenzie
Legion Director
Only three years ago Royal Canadian Legion Br. 78 in Sioux Lookout claimed the top spot in Canada for most living members of the Second World War. Four living members was not a large number, but they symbolized the tenacity and commitment of our local Legion branch over the decades.
Today, Adam Zarecki is the only man standing from the Second World War years. Adam is more than 100 years old, still living in town.
Last week the Legion project of printing large banners with pictures of Sioux Lookout boys who went to war but never returned took shape. With assistance from the municipality and Sioux Hydro these banners have been raised throughout downtown. Faces of these heroes from decades past now have names attached.
This year’s Remembrance Day Ceremony will open for a short memorial at the cenotaph at town beach, beginning at 10:55 November 11, then move to the Legion for further memorials at 11 o’clock. Legion doors will open at 10:30.
Lest we forget!
A steady stream of visitors attended the Edwin Switzer Memorial, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #78 last Saturday for a Remembrance Day Tea.
Organized by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the afternoon tea was a fundraiser for the Legion...
