A team of Sioux Lookout darts players will take on some of the best darts players in Canada when they compete at the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Darts Championship in Cochrane, Alberta from May 1-4.
The team of Dale Oakley, Derrick Greene, Shane Sakchekapo, and Scotty Coulson punched their ticket to the national competition by sweeping the Northwestern Ontario /Manitoba Provincial Command Darts Championship in Portage la Prairie March 14 and 15.
Shane Sakchekapo won the Singles Division. Shane Sakchekapo and Derrick Greene won the Doubles Division, and Sakchekapo, Greene, Scotty Coulson and Dale Oakley won the Team Division.
The team said it’s the best showing ever for the Sioux Lookout Legion at the provincial competition.
The team made it to the provincial competition by winning in Singles, Doubles, and Team competition at the Legion district darts competition hosted by Sioux Lookout Legion, Branch 78 in January.
The team from Sioux Lookout had to get by teams from Dryden, Atikokan, Kenora, Oxdrift, and Fort Frances to advance to the provincials.
“We had to compete through Singles, Doubles, and Teams on that weekend to make our way to provincials and we were lucky enough to win every event,” Sakchekapo said.
The members of the Sioux Lookout Legion Branch 78 Dart Team said they’re excited to compete in the national competition.
“We can put Sioux Lookout on the map for darts,” Coulson remarked.
“It’s huge,” Greene agreed.
“The playing field is going to be top notch,” Sakchekapo said.
Sakchekapo attended the national competition last year in Singles competition, finishing second.
He said he’s excited to be going back, this time with his whole team.
“I’m kind of happy to go back again and I’m even more happy that I get to bring the team with me. You get to enjoy the game with your friends, teammates,” he said.
Sakchekapo started playing darts about nine years ago after dropping by the Legion and seeing some of his friends play. He never thought the sport would take him across the country and the world.
In late November 2025, Sakchekapo was one of the two top darts players in Canda to earn a spot at the WDF World Championships in England.
“I was able to play on the iconic Lakeside stage where darts was born and being on that stage, under the spotlights, is something you only dream of as a darts player.”
He said he was proud to represent Canada and to represent Sioux Lookout.
Also last year, Sakchekapo earned the honour of captaining Team Canada at the World Cup of Darts in Seoul, Korea.
Sakchekapo said getting to go to the national competition with the friends who got him into the sport is amazing.
“We’re just hoping that the town of Sioux Lookout can see what they’ve created. Who we are, what we’re doing not only for ourselves, but for the Legion, for our town” Sakchekapo said.
Anyone who would like to help out the team with the trip’s expenses can contact any of the members or drop by the Legion and tell them you want to help out the darts team.
