Santa’s Village to replace traditional Santa Claus Parade in Sioux Lookout

The Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce has organized Sioux Lookout’s Santa Claus Parade for many years. This year, at their most recent Board meeting, the Chamber made the decision to no longer organize the Santa Claus Parade.
Alana Anderson, President of the Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce, said, “It came down to a number of things. One, just the availability of volunteers and help with the event. Just like everybody else we’re struggling in that area like all the clubs and we’ve seen a decline in the number of people who want to volunteer to help with things. And then just this past year we’ve also been looking at realigning what our focus is going to be on for Sioux Lookout.”
In “A Message from the Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce” shared with the community on Facebook last week, the Chamber shared, “the Chamber is looking for a new space to call home, we are still located in Travel Information Centre, and will be until the end of September 2027. We are continuing our dialogue with the Municipality on a potential new location.”
The Chamber also shared, “The Chamber is realigning its focus to better support our businesses and members,” adding, “As part of this change, the Chamber will no longer be organizing community events.”
“We have actively been trying to have other organizations or groups take on some of these events with no luck, so we’ve been working on that part for a couple of years,” Anderson said.
The Chamber added in its message, “Our goal is for these much-loved events to continue. We will be engaging in conversation with the Municipality, and reaching out to local businesses and organizations who may be interested in taking them on. Over the next year we will be working alongside the Municipality to ensure as smooth as possible a transition in the offering of these treasured community events.”
Anderson said another group will be taking over this year’s Moonlight Madness event.
In an Oct. 30 media release issued by the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, the Municipality shared, “The Chamber advised the Municipality on the evening of Friday, October 16th that it would no longer be organizing the parade. Municipal staff had a limited amount of time to determine what could safely and practically be delivered. As part of that review, the Municipality must consider the insurance and risk-management requirements that would apply if it assumed responsibility for a traditional moving parade.”
The Municipality continued, “A traditional moving parade organized by the Municipality would introduce additional insurance and safety requirements for both the Municipality and participants. These added costs, paperwork, and restrictions would make participation highly impractical. Due to these restrictions, the Santa’s Village concept was developed as a way to preserve the fun and community spirit of the parade, including decorated floats and vehicles, while creating a format that is welcoming, practical, and safe for all. Visitors to the village can come and go as they please, over the course of three hours, which allows much greater flexibility for those wishing to take part in the holiday magic.”
“We are grateful to the Chamber of Commerce for the many years it organized the Santa Claus Parade and for reaching out to the Municipality when it became clear the Chamber would not be able to organize it this year,” said Brian MacKinnon, Chief Administrative Officer for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. “With limited planning time, our focus has been on keeping the spirit of this community tradition alive. We want families to still enjoy the decorated floats, lights, Santa, music, caroling and the chance to come together downtown for a fun and memorable holiday celebration.”
On local Facebook pages where people were made aware that there would not be a traditional Santa Claus Parade, reactions most commonly were of dismay.
The Chamber shared in its message, “Looking back, we recognize that this decision was not carried out with the planning and conversation with community organizations that it deserved. We also should not have assumed that the Municipality could simply take these events on with short notice. Municipal events involve many layers, including policy/procedures and insurance, that take time to have in place.”
The message from the Chamber stated, “We know change can be frustrating, and it is easy to look for someone to blame. But the Municipality, community organizations, businesses and residents all want the same thing: a strong, welcoming Sioux Lookout. We ask everyone to keep conversations online respectful, and to support where you can. If you or your organization is interested in helping with any events, please reach out to us at [email protected].”
The message from the Chamber also stated, “It is also important to remember that the Municipality has always been a strong supporter of the Santa Claus Parade and the many events that happen throughout the year.”
“We know the Santa Claus Parade is a cherished tradition for many families, and we wanted to make sure our community could still gather for a joyful holiday celebration this year,” said Meredith Culham, Manager of Recreation and Culture. “Santa’s Village will keep many of the familiar parade elements, including decorated floats and vehicles, while giving families more time to enjoy the displays, visit Santa, sing carols, and share hot chocolate together.”
Santa’s Village will run from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 6.
The Municipality shared, “The celebration will flow from Front Street to Centennial Park with Cocoa and Carols, including holiday caroling, hot chocolate and other warm beverages, and bonfires. The Municipality will also add more holiday lights and festive elements throughout the Centennial Park area this year to further enhance the atmosphere and create a welcoming holiday setting for families and visitors. Families will also be able to visit Santa Claus and have their photos taken at the Heritage Railway Station.”
“The stationary, walk-through format allows decorated floats, trucks, trailers, and community displays to remain an important part of the celebration while reducing the interaction between moving parade vehicles and spectators,” said Jeremy Funk, Fire Chief for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. “Closing this section of Front Street to regular traffic will help us create a more controlled event area where families can move between the displays and activities and enjoy the celebration at their own pace.”
The Municipality is inviting local businesses, organizations, community groups, residents and food vendors to help bring the parade atmosphere to life along Front Street. “Participants can create a decorated stationary float or themed display, decorate a storefront, offer a simple family-friendly activity, serve food, or share information about their work in the community,” the Municipality shared.
Participant setup will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with cleanup to be completed by 9:00 p.m.

The Municipality advised that additional event and road-closure information will be shared in the coming weeks.
“The Municipality looks forward to celebrating with residents and visitors and invites the community to help fill Front Street and Centennial Park with lights, music, decorated floats, Santa, caroling, and holiday cheer,” the Municipality concluded.
“We’ve received emails and concerns and we have people who are interested in taking on the Santa Claus Parade so we’re definitely open to working with anyone or group who wants to take some of these events over. We have no problem handing over all the work we’ve done in the past so we can share that,” Anderson said.
A post on some local Facebook pages indicates a small group of people are looking into the possibility of trying to make a traditional Santa Claus Parade happen.
Remembrance Day services will be taking place in both Sioux Lookout and Hudson on Nov. 11...
