Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora—Kiiwetinoong
Dear Constituents
The twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway through northwestern Ontario is essential. We have all known someone who has been seriously injured or tragically lost their life while travelling this route. Many more, myself included, have had “close calls” on the highway. This project is critical to the safety of all residents and travellers in our region.
Highway twinning would also grow our economy, with many local jobs necessary to build this major corridor. Further, it would boost our productivity as a country because, as it stands now, many goods are delayed traveling through northwestern Ontario due to highway closures. Each time the highway is closed it costs our economy, and the addition of a twinned corridor would limit the impact of any closures.
This is even more vital now with current threats to our sovereignty. Canada must build major projects that create jobs, grow our economy, and unite Canadians from coast to coast. I can think of no better project to do that than improving our national highway. That is why I have sponsored a local petition calling for the federal government to immediately support the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway in northwestern Ontario
(https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-7105).
