Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora—Kiiwetinoong
Dear Constituents
In Ottawa this week, I’ve been grateful to meet with local community leaders about the pressing issues that matter to northwestern Ontario. I had the opportunity to meet with representatives of Muskrat Dam First Nation, Lac Seul First Nation, and Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation. We had positive and productive conversations about economic growth opportunities, infrastructure priorities, and community health and safety. It’s an honour to advocate for northern communities
in Parliament.
I also spoke in the House of Commons to condemn the government’s inaction over the devastating sawmill shutdown in Ear Falls. It’s unacceptable that the Prime Minister has allowed lumber tariffs to triple under his watch—from 14 to 45 percent. Now, hundreds of workers in the community are without jobs, and many more across the region are impacted indirectly. Despite repeated calls for action, the Liberals still have not provided support for these workers. I will continue to hold the government to account and fight for northern Ontario in the face of Liberal inaction.
Young Canadians are also being left behind by the Liberals. Youth unemployment has risen to nearly 15 percent, its highest peak since 2010-outside of the COVID-19 pandemic years. Young people are willing and ready to work, but under this Prime Minister, they are struggling to find jobs and places to live. Many are giving up on their dream of homeownership altogether. Liberal spending has driven up the cost of living and reduced the opportunities for young people to succeed in our country. My Conservative colleagues and I will continue advocating for lower taxes and responsible government spending to restore the Canadian promise of strong paycheques, housing, and hope.
