The Pardon Project launches in North Caribou Lake First Nation
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region is proud to announce the launch of The Pardon Project, an initiative aimed at supporting individuals eligible for a record suspension in Canada.
This collaborative effort between the OPP, Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services, Parole Board of Canada and Ontario Court Services - Northwest Region, is designed to provide informed, accessible assistance to individuals-particularly those living in remote and northern communities-who are seeking to navigate the record suspension process through the Parole Board of Canada.
The Pardon Project officially launched in North Caribou Lake First Nation in June 2025, offering residents a unique opportunity to access support and guidance through the application process. The initiative is expected to have a lasting impact by removing barriers to employment, education, and community reintegration for those with eligible criminal records.
“The Pardon Project in North Caribou Lake First Nation reflects the strength of the OPP’s ongoing partnership with NAN Legal Services and the OPP’s commitment to reconciliation,” said Staff Sergeant Karl Duewel of OPP North West Region. “Being part of this initiative is about more than addressing past wrongs - it’s about rebuilding trust, supporting healing, and walking alongside communities on the path forward.”
“The Pardon Project is a huge stepping stone for the future of North Caribou Lake First Nation, it is such an amazing sight to see members of my home community taking advantage of this amazing opportunity,” added Stallone Quequish, Community Prevention and Intervention Manager at Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services.
With the success seen in North Caribou Lake First Nation, the OPP, Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services, Parole Board of Canada and Ontario Court Services- Northwest Region, will continue to expand the program.
