The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is inviting local residents and visitors to town to attend the official unveiling of the Canada National “WOLVES” Mural Mosaic on Monday, October 26 at 12:30 p.m. at the King Street entrance of the Sioux Lookout Recreation Centre.
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout shared in an Oct. 7 media release, “The mural is part of Mural Mosaic’s collaborative public art initiative, which brings together individual works of art created by participants from Canada and around the world. Each participant creates an individual painted tile, with the completed pieces coming together to form one larger image.
“Sioux Lookout’s mural features the Canada National “WOLVES” design and will become a permanent public art installation in the community.”
The Municipality shared that the “WOLVES” mural will be located on the exterior of the Sioux Lookout Recreation Centre and Memorial Arena, facing King Street. The completed mural will measure approximately 12 feet high by 24 feet wide and will be composed of approximately 2500 tiles.
“Tiles were submitted by artists from across Canada and beyond, with approximately 70 tiles received from Sioux Lookout residents. Some of these tiles were completed by Summer Day Camp youth and staff, some were created by members of the Sioux Area Senior Activity Centre, and some were completed at a paint night hosted by the Sioux Lookout Public Library. Others were completed by individuals within our community,” the Municipality explained.
The Municipality noted the Sioux Lookout unveiling is also part of a special October tour coordinated by Mural Mosaic. “Sioux Lookout is one of four host communities included in the October tour dates, with two hosts in Canada and two in the United States. The tour brings the Mural Mosaic project to participating communities and provides an opportunity to celebrate the completed installations alongside the people and communities that helped bring them to life,” the Municipal media release informed.
“Mural Mosaic has been creating collaborative mosaic projects since 2003, with a focus on bringing people together through art and celebrating individual creativity as part of a larger collective work,” the Municipality noted.
“We are excited to have the Mural Mosaic’s Canada “WOLVES” become a permanent part of Sioux Lookout. The wolves are a fitting representation of our connection to the land and natural environment, while the mosaic itself celebrates creativity, community and the idea of individual contributions coming together to create something bigger. We are proud to bring this unique piece of public art to our community for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Meredith Culham, Recreation & Culture Manager for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout.
“The Municipality encourages the community to join us for the official reveal and get a first look at this unique addition to Sioux Lookout’s public spaces,” the Municipality concluded.
