Evelyn Makahnouk

Oct. 28, 1929 - June 22, 2026

Evelyn passed away at the age of 96 on June 22, 2026 at the Meno Ya Win Hospital and now reunited with her beloved husband Joseph Makahnouk.

She was  the youngest daughter of Annie and Alec Sapay and resided on Lac Seul (Frenchman’s Head) reserve along with her eight sisters and two brothers.

She left her home reserve with daughter Noreen to marry our father Joseph Makahnouk and went on to raise seven more children off reserve in Sioux Lookout.

She was a survivor of the Indian Residential School system but always maintained her traditional harvesting ways throughout her life like moose and partridge hunting, fishing, wild rice and blue berry picking, right up to the age of 96.

She was employed as a Ward Clerk/Interpreter at the Zone Hospital for many years.

She was a dedicated Legion Ladies member where she volunteered for many years and received a pin for 45+ years

She enjoyed many summers at her camp on Mill Lake where she entertained many family/friends and maintained a vegetable garden and enjoyed being in nature surroundings.

Evelyn Makahnouk is survived and will be missed by her children, Noreen Beebe, Stanley Makahnouk, Joseph Makahnouk, Michael Makahnouk, JoAnn (Gord) Ford, Peter Makahnouk, Diane Hoey and best friend June Wynn.

She is survived by many grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews and friends.

She is predeceased by her husband Joseph Makahnouk, son David Makahnouk, daughter in law Bernice Makahnouk,  son in law Arnold Beebe, grandsons Dean Hoey Jr and Stanalee Makahnouk.

Funeral burial took place at Hillcrest Cemetery officiated with Rev. Muriel Anderson on Saturday, July 25, 2026.  If friends so desire, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, P.O. Box 626, Sioux Lookout, On. P8T 1B1

Thank you to Doctor Brian Lorbinski, doctor and nursing staff, Personal Support Workers, Interpreters, Activation Staff, physio staff who provided excellent care during her stay at Menowaywin Hospital.

Thanks to all those who gave donations, flower arrangements, and those who provided help before, during and after the funeral service.
