KOBE Expands Education Pathways Across Northwestern Ontario
Recent milestones highlight student growth and community-driven learning

Keewaytinook Okimakanak Board of Education (KOBE) is celebrating a series of recent milestones that highlight student growth, expanded learning opportunities, and the strength of community-driven education across Northwestern Ontario.
One of the most significant accomplishments this year was the graduation of participants from KOBE’s pilot Educational Assistant (EA) Certificate program. Designed to build local capacity and create pathways into education careers, the program supported learners in developing the skills and experience needed to work in schools within their own communities.
The eight graduates are now positioned to contribute directly to student success, bringing strong community connections and lived experience into classrooms.
Adult learners are also achieving success through KOBE’s Adult Education program, with graduates completing their studies this year and taking important steps forward into employment, training, and continued learning.
The program supports individuals returning to education at different stages of life, creating flexible pathways to complete secondary credits and build skills for future goals.
For many, graduation marks not just the completion of coursework, but a powerful moment of persistence and personal achievement.
KOBE has also seen powerful impacts through student participation in the Indigenous Games, where grade 6, 7, and 8 students from across communities came together to build skills, confidence, and relationships.
For one chaperone, the experience reshaped expectations entirely.
“I was worried about sending my Grade 8 students off to high school—and frankly, they were worried too,” they shared. “Many of my Grade 8 girls felt anxious about leaving their community: being on their own, making new friends, and adjusting to an unfamiliar environment.”
Those concerns quickly shifted during the Games.
“The KOBE Games showed me that I had far less to worry about than I thought.” Students adapted quickly to a new routine, built friendships across communities, and began looking ahead to high school with a new sense of excitement.
The impact extended beyond the event itself, influencing how students see their future.
“Now, they are counting down the days until high school—eagerly wondering which of their new friends they’ll see again. The excitement for next year’s games is palpable.”
The chaperone described a noticeable shift in confidence, resilience, and independence among students, noting that their belief in themselves has grown significantly.
The success of the Games has sparked strong student interest in continuing the initiative, with some students now preparing letters to share their experiences directly with KOBE
leadership.
Across all of its work, KOBE remains focused on supporting students through key transitions, building confidence, and creating opportunities that reflect each learner’s path.
“We are seeing the impact of creating opportunities that meet people where they are, whether that is a student preparing for high school or an adult returning to complete their education,” said Patrick Stoddart, Director of Education. “When learners feel supported and connected, they are more confident in taking the next step forward.”
By investing in both programming and people, KOBE continues to strengthen connections between communities and education, helping students move forward with confidence and support.
