Community Corner
Green Team Sioux Lookout
Maybe you have seen these civic heroes collecting litter around town over the years.
Karl, Susan, Bill, Merle, Edith, Corinne, Jennifer (and soon Komal) have for years quietly gone around town clearing our streets of litter. With Earth Day approaching on April 22, the Municipal Environment Committee decided it was time to honour these modest folks.
On March 29th, we pulled together the Collectors we knew about to see how we could help them and the litter issue in general. Admirably, the group does not want any reward and turned down the offer of “Green Team” T-shirts as this could result in even more waste! Good for them! The team gave us useful feedback and suggestions.
All of these folks have their own unique system of collecting and disposing of the litter they collect and we are looking at ways of making it easier for them. The Environment Committee will be providing the volunteers with Nippers, aka Picker Uppers. All of them are anxious to look at ways to recruit more people who will collect litter but more importantly want to find ways to make littering unacceptable. “Respect your community, Respect the Land” was the slogan they’d like to promote. For one member, her motive is to “Light a candle rather than curse the darkness”.
So if you see these folks, or anyone else for that matter, voluntarily collecting litter, please give them a wave, the thumbs up, a honk or a simple “Thank you”. And if you’d like to be a Collector and Green Teamer, give the Council members on the Green Team a call - Joyce at 807-737-2323 or Reece 807-355-0166.
