Twenty-two teams braved last Friday’s rainy weather to participate in the 2025 Morgan Fuels Bombers Golf Classic.
Held on July 11 at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club, the rain, which came down heavily at times, forced tournament organizers to pivot to a shotgun start and reduce the number of holes played from 18 to 9. The tournament used a four player best ball format.
Sioux Lookout Bombers President Joe Cassidy said everything went well despite the weather, “I can’t say enough about how good everyone was about it. They understand you have to pick a date and go with it and do the best you can. Unfortunately, we know this year we’ve been starved for rain and it just happened to rain the most on the day we picked for our golf tournament.”
This year’s tournament champions were the H&M Cars team, shooting a -7, of Anthony Zarecki, Titus Morris, Tom Fiddler, and Gene Duncan. Coming in second, at -6, was the Bogeymen team of Matt Monkman, Ryan Dasno, Whitney Van Horne, and Andy Brunton, Finishing in third place, also at -6, was the Tasty Greens team of Jason Suprovich, Greg Baas, Clint Lorteau, and Keith Lawrence.
“It’s our fifth time doing the tournament. It’s a big fundraiser for us and it helps a lot with some of the costs leading into the season,” Cassidy explained.
Cassidy thanked this year’s sponsors, many of who have been sponsoring the tournament right from the start.
Cassidy also expressed his thanks to all of this year’s teams and the volunteers who made the tournament possible.
He also thanked the Sioux Lookout Shrine Club for feeding this year’s batch of hungry golfers and volunteers.
Cassidy said he’s looking forward to the upcoming hockey season.
“We’ve got a lot of signings. Carson (Johnstone, Bombers Head Coach) and Austen (Hoey, GM) attended the TEP down in Toronto for a few days a couple weeks ago, that’s where a lot of the recent signings we’ve had are coming from,” Cassidy explained.
According to their website, “The TEP Tournament is Canada’s premier summer hockey tournament, designed specifically for junior hockey players looking to take their game to the next level,” offering players, “a unique opportunity to compete in a highly competitive environment while showcasing their skills to NCAA, CHL, and Tier 2 Jr. A scouts, general managers, and coaches.”
The Bombers are planning their hockey camp for the beginning of September.
“Really looking forward to camp this year and seeing everyone on the ice and getting back into the swing of things. It’s going to be here before we know it,” Cassidy said.
