Boat Launch Permits now available
Tim Brody - Editor
With walleye season set to open this weekend, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout is reminding anyone planning to use local boat launches that permits are required to park, launch a boat, or fish from the dock at any of the boat launch locations.
Local boat launches include:
- Superior Junction
- Sturgeon River Road
- West Point Cove
- Abram Lake Mile 5
- Botham’s Bay on Big Vermilion
- Hudson Boat Launch
- Big Vermilion West
- of Hudson
- Big Vermilion Bernier’s Beach
- Butterfly Lake
- Deception Bay
The Municipality advised that Boat Launch Permit fees for 2021 remain unchanged from last year and are $7.00 per day, $25.00 per week, or $50.00 for the entire season.
Boat launch permits may be purchased from the front desk of the Recreation and Culture Department between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, once the provincial lockdown is lifted and the department can open to the public once again. “Until then, permits are also available at Anderson’s Lodge, DJ’s Gas Bar, Mascotto’s Marina, and River’s Edge Outfitters during their regular business hours,” the Municipality advised. Other permit locations may also become available and people are asked to check the municipality’s website (https://www.siouxlookout.ca/en/index.asp) for the most current list of locations. Payment can be made by cash or cheque, payable to The Municipality of Sioux Lookout.
“We would also like to remind everyone that water levels this spring remain low in area lakes. Because of this, extreme caution is advised when launching your boat and extra attention should be payed to underwater obstacles that may not normally be a problem. Please note that the boat launches at Deception Bay, Mile 5, and Superior Junction are currently not closed, but are ‘use at own risk,’ the Municipality shared, adding, “Also due to low water levels, docks will not be going in at all boat launch locations at this time. Some areas have been blocked off and are inaccessible. Please respect the barriers that are in place, for everyone’s safety. The situation will be reviewed throughout the spring, as water levels change.”
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout advised that the boat launch at Ojibway Provincial Park is not covered by a Municipal Boat Launch Permit.
