Restore Our Earth
Earth Day, April 22, 2021 has come and gone but caring for our earth is an ongoing responsibility. Mayor and council have proclaimed May and June as honeybee appreciation months. During this time there will be no repercussions for exceeding the maximum grass/weed height of 8 inches.
This is a fantastic way to contribute to the ‘Restore Our Earth’ theme for Earth Day which was the theme for this year’s Earth Day.
Last year my family and I (Jamie MacLeod) let a big portion of our yard grow and we were delighted with the many varieties of wild flowers that would pop up.
Composting is another great way to do our part restoring our earth. The carbon in our organic waste (ex: food scraps, leaves, branches) can be used to help regenerate our soil, instead of going to the landfill. There are many different ways to recycle our debris, some of which include making compost teas, worm farms, and/or feeding chickens/rabbits. Perhaps there is a neighbor that composts and could use more material.
Tips for composting:
- Make sure you have enough brown! Often people put too much green and it gets smelly and or slimy. Brown includes, dry leaves, dry brown grass, wood chips and straw.
- Volume is important as well to create the heat needed for the bacteria to live.
- Water it. The bacteria need water to do their magic.
- Mix it. The middle of the pile will break down the quickest. Mixing it up adds more food to the middle of the pile and provides air to prevent the pile going anaerobic.
Letting your yard grow and composting are just some steps you can take towards environmental sustainability. Other actions such as picking up litter, recycling, and using reusable bags go a long way in restoring our earth. Earth Day is everyday! Let’s all do our part to “Restore Our Earth”.
