Evacuees from Bearskin Lake First Nation have returned home after spending approximately three weeks in Sioux Lookout due to severe flooding in the remote First Nation community.
Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance declared a State of Emergency on Nov. 13 to assist with the evacuation of Bearskin Lake First Nation residents to the community.
The 184 evacuees staying in Sioux Lookout stayed at a local hotel, with meals being provided by a local restaurant.
An Information/Supplies Centre was established at the host hotel, where evacuees were able to obtain laundry money, taxi vouchers and various toiletries.
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout explained in a news release that the, “Emergency Declaration ensures that resources are made available and any costs incurred by the Municipality resulting from the assistance provided, are covered by the provincial and/or federal governments.”
