Squash season wraps up, regional tournament coming

The Sioux Lookout Squash Club has wrapped up play for another season.
Players accumulated points throughout the season, which determined the winners of the 2017-2018 Squash Ladder League.
This year’s overall winner was league convenor and organizer Gerson Agustin.
Adam Clark was A division champ. Randy Wilson was first in the B division. Andrea Romyn placed first in the C division, and Anthony Rasetti took home top spot in the D division.
The league’s modified scoring system allowed players of different skill levels to compete against each other on an equal footing.
Agustin said the system has worked very well.
He said a bonus of the system is that by allowing all players the opportunity to play each other, rather than just players at their skill level, it promotes greater camaraderie in the league and allows more experienced players to mentor newer players.
“I’ve seen, from the beginning of October, people in the D and C divisions are much more competitive and skilled,” he said.
Agustin said the league, which ran from October to April, grew to 21 participants this season. He projects that number will continue to increase.
A squash ladder team tournament was held April 27.
Team Salming, comprised of Gerson Agustin, Craig Mahoney, Randy Wilson, and Andrea Romyn, narrowly defeated Team Victor, made up of Adam Clark, Rob Lawrance, Andreas Asmus, and David Galloway.
The final score was Team Salming 307, Team Victor 296.
Agustin has invited squash players from around the region to Sioux Lookout for the Sioux Lookout Squash Club’s 5th Annual Sioux Lookout Squash Open later this month.
The regional event will be held May 25 to 27 at the Sioux Lookout Recreation Centre. Members of the public are invited to drop by and check out the action.
Players interested in signing up for the tournament are asked to register by Friday, May 18 at 4 p.m.
