Sioux Lookout Tax Coalition hosts community rally

The Sioux Lookout Tax Coalition welcomed community members to their first-ever community rally where residents had the opportunity to meet, chat, and connect with Sioux Lookout Tax Coalition endorsed candidates for mayor and council. The rally, which also featured a free barbeque, took place at the Royal Canadian Legion.
“As we got near the election, we felt that we needed to have a closer touch with the community,” said Ron Bird, who is a candidate for councillor-at-large.
“We started talking about having a rally around four months ago. The whole purpose of this is to bring community members together, in a casual way, where we can talk about community issues and prepare our platform so that they meet up with the vision of the community moving forward,” explained mayoral candidate Jason Bailey.
Councillor-at-large candidates Debbie Baker and Cory Lago were also in attendance alongside Bailey and Bird. Baker agreed with other members that the rally provided good, productive opportunities to connect with different members of the community.
“This is a good setting where we can really talk with the community and find out different ideas,” said Baker.
“I find you get a lot done in a more relaxed environment where you can connect with people and then take that back to a more formal setting to look at how we’re doing things. We’ve really been pushing the fact that we need to meet regularly with the community and get their feedback,” she continued.
Getting the communities’ feedback is exactly what started the Sioux Lookout Tax Coalition nearly four years ago.
“It all started with a petition that we submitted to the community three and a half years ago, where we ended up with 2,000-plus signatures in support of getting a zero per cent tax increase,” said Bailey.
The community will have a chance to learn more about mayoral and councillor-at-large candidates on October 1 at an all-candidates forum which will take place at the Legion at 6 p.m.
The forum will feature all three mayoral candidates and the ten councillor-at-large candidates.
