People aged 55 plus from the Sioux Lookout area, and across the region, are being invited to the Seniors Active Living Fair September 21, in the upper Legion hall.
“It’s to help seniors stay in their homes, help them with their finances, find out where they can get help as far as safety equipment. There will be some income tax people here from Toronto,” explained Sioux Area Senior Activity Centre president Bob Weaver.
He added, “Say if you put a new kitchen floor in, as long as it’s a safety floor, a skid resistant floor, you can deduct that on your income tax. There are a lot of things.”
The fair is held in different communities each year across Northwestern Ontario.
“The people from here who have gone have financially benefited from their participation because they’ve got information that allowed them to fix up and live in their own homes,” explained Dianna Ayotte, the event volunteer coordinator.
“Bob has taken the initiative to apply to have it here in town,” she added.
Approximately 18 exhibitors will be setting up informational booths at the event.
Weaver said Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell plans to attend. He is hopeful Kenora MP Bob Nault will also be able to attend.
Anyone interested in attending must register by September 15.
A sign-up sheet is available at the Sioux Area Seniors Activity Centre.
People can also register by calling Edith Clace at 737-3710.
Weaver and Ayotte are asking people to come for 9:30 a.m. The free event is expected to run until 2 p.m. and will include lunch, draws, and guest speakers.
Anyone able to help out at the event is asked to contact Ayotte at 738-0471.
The Sioux Area Senior Activity Centre is acting in partnership with the Older Adult Centres Association of Ontario and the Ministry of Seniors Affairs to host the event.
