Road construction project bringing changes for travelling public

Construction of the Wellington Street North Corridor Upgrade Project will get under way after the May long weekend.
The construction project will result in some big changes to the way the travelling public gets around the community.
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout informed:
• Northbound traffic on Highway 72, intending to access Sioux Lookout’s downtown core via Wellington Street, will be detoured at the Ed Ariano By-pass, through Alcona Drive and King Street, to access downtown.
• All traffic travelling north and westbound on Wellington Street beyond the Hwy 72/Ed Ariano By-pass intersection will be “local traffic only” and Wellington Street north and west of Fifth Avenue will be closed. Accommodations will be made to facilitate access beyond Fifth Avenue to local residences and businesses within the construction zone. In addition, Wellington Street, south of the CN overpass, will be “local traffic only” to provide access for the residents of Lakeshore Drive, but access to Wellington Street south of Lakeshore drive will be restricted.
Construction will be taking place between the Wellington Street/Fifth Avenue intersection, where an upgrade took place last summer, northward to the CN overpass, meeting up with the southern part of the Wellington Street/Front Street Intersection, which was upgrade in 2012.
The project, which fills in the gap between the two past roads projects, includes replacing all watermains within the construction limits, the installation of new and upgraded storm water infrastructure, and complete new surface works including concrete curb/gutter, asphalt surface, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes.
Construction is expected to take approximately four months.
The project is anticipated to be complete by mid-September.
