The Queen Elizabeth District High School (QEDHS) mixed curling team has earned a spot at NWOSSA, the Northern Ontario championship.
The team posted a three win, one loss record at the Northwestern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (NORWOSSA) curling championship, which took place February 11 and 12 at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club.
The mixed team from Fort Frances High School posted the same record, forcing a playoff between the two teams.
Fort Frances won and the team from QEDHS earned silver medals.
The team will head to Fort Frances to compete at NWOSSA March 4 and 5.
Five teams competed in the mixed division.
Members of the QEDHS mixed curling team are Bryson Baker, Clara Colquhoun, Josh Rhone, Brittany Barkman, and Haileigh Doxtater-Wynn. Nicholas Popovic is also on the team but did not attend the NORWOSSA championship as he was accompanying 270 Otter Squadron in the provincial biathlon competition.
Team coach Natalie Popovic commented, “I think we did awesome. We came with no expectations as we are a brand new team with three of our six curlers starting the season with zero experience. We didn’t even know there was an NWOSSA event for the mixed. But we were 3-0 for wins after the first day. We had two blowout wins and a very close game with Fort Frances at 8:30 Saturday evening.
“We couldn’t believe we won but we pulled off a five ender and a four ender in that game so it was super exciting to watch. We may have got a bit lucky, but our skip is a natural and the rest of the team has come a long way in three short months on developing their skills and etiquette of the game. I am super proud of them.”
The QEDHS boys curling team finished fifth in the competition with a record of one win and four losses.
Atikokan took first and Fort Frances was second.
Six teams competed in the boys division.
The QEDHS girls team just missed out on a trip to NWOSSA, finishing third with a record of three wins and two losses.
Rainy River was first and Fort Frances was second.
Teams from Rainy River, Fort Frances, Atikokan, Red Lake, Whitefish Bay, and Kenora came to Sioux Lookout for the NORWOSSA championship.
