QEDHS hosts second annual Besties awards gala

Three-hundred people packed the Queen Elizabeth District High School (QEDHS) gymnasium on June 5 for the second annual Best of the Best Awards Gala (The Besties) celebrating students’ academic and artistic accomplishments.
This year, the school decided to expand the Besties to recognize even more students.
“We have 48 trophies with close to 150 nominees this year. We have construction involved, aesthetics involved and we have more musical performances this year as well,” said Greg Link, who is a film teacher at QEDHS and also helped bring the Besties to fruition.
“Last year we had 17 community sponsors and this year we have 24. It’s grown considerably,” said Lance Hildebrand, who is an art teacher at QEDHS and helped initiate the Besties.
Woodwork was featured from construction students and aesthetic students had a spa booth open where residents, staff and students could get their nails and hair done before the awards ceremony.
“I took over the class this year and I thought this would be a cool way to showcase some of the kid’s art. We made a hands-on project out of it and my students totally planned the booth from start to finish. It was a great opportunity for my students to show the community what we do,” explained QEDHS aesthetics teacher Tia Hoey.
“The Besties is so arts based, so we felt that we had to find a way to get involved in it somehow. It turned out really nice. We had a similar booth at the Relay for Life event as well. We got a really good response from people at Relay for Life, and the experience was similar for the Besties,” she continued.
One student that had a busy night was Rebecca Driver. Along with winning the Senior Artist of the Year award, she also helped unveil the new Sioux North High School logo, which she designed through a schoolwide logo contest.
More details on the new logo can be found on page 12.
Driver said she she’s happy that there’s an event that acknowledges and recognizes students with artistic talents.
“It feels great because you don’t always hear about everything that’s going on, and you always hear about sports. There are so many other people and talents in the school, so it’s nice to have an event that showcases that,” she said.
Musical performances gave students another way to showcase their talents and were featured throughout the awards presentation. Among the performers were: Josh Bellingham, Aurora Mykulak, Rico Belmore, Leta Meekis, Darren Gray, Ivory Mason & Sam Perrault, Piper Jewell and Keaton Mason (aka Khione and Jakean) and The Banditios, which featured Josh Bellingham with Caleb Wills, Jude Kamenawatamin, Jerrell Bighead and Kanesha Esh.
