Out and About
Bronze medal finish
The Ontario Native Volleyball Championships were held on April 6, 7 and 8 this year; again, in Sault Ste. Marie.
NWO Nitro, consisting of two girls from Pelican Falls, one from Thunder Bay, and four from Sioux Lookout, would travel all the way down.
Last year they came home with a silver medal.
Again, they would be the only team representing the NAN communities at this tournament, which featured teams from all over the province.
They finished the opening day with a three wins and two loss record; good enough for third place heading into the playoffs on Sunday.
The two teams they lost to were from Fort Frances and Whitefish Bay. Both teams featured college varsity players and elite level players, but the girls gave both teams a good fight and showed they would be one of the teams competing for the championship on Sunday.
In the quarter-finals they easily defeated a team from Rama First Nation.
In the semi-final game they would face Whitefish Bay in a rematch. They lost the opening set 25-16. The second set they regrouped and played much harder. They were tied up 21-21 before Whitefish Bay pulled away and won 25-22.
In the bronze medal game NWO Nitro would defeat the Treaty 3 Titans two games to one. Another good finish, again.
It is the strong volleyball programs of our local high schools that allow our girls to do so well at this tournament.
