The Municipally-operated Norah Love Children’s Centre will be closing its doors in November after providing child care services in Sioux Lookout for 35 years.
Norah Love Children’s Centre’s final day of operations will be on November 2, when they will close for good at 5:30 p.m.
“All children at the Norah Love facility will be transitioned to a newly renovated and expanded day care within Sioux Mountain Public School,” said Michelle Larose, Municipal CAO, adding, “the Sioux Mountain Children’s Centre will, in fact, offer five more toddler spaces that weren’t previously available at the Norah Love facility.”
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout further informed, “In September 2018, the Municipality accepted an offer from the Kenora District Services Board (KDSB) to purchase the facility, in recognition that the facility would become surplus to Municipal needs following the completion of the expanded space at Sioux Mountain Children’s Centre.”
“It has been a pleasure serving the families of Sioux Lookout over the last 35 years,” commented Day Care Manager, Kelly Negus, adding, “we are looking forward to continuing to provide high quality child care services within the Sioux Mountain and Biidaaban facilities, located within Sioux Mountain Public School and Sacred Heart School, respectively, and we encourage parents with any questions to contact us.”
Sioux Mountain Children’s Centre can be reached at 737-2055 and the Biidaaban Children’s Centre can be reached at 737-4570.
The Municipality hinted on their Facebook page that the building may continue to be used for child care services in the future when replying to a comment from a local resident.
Josee Duewel asked, “Why wouldn’t the municipality keep the day care center open in addition to the newly expanded and renovated day care centres, we all know how much Sioux lookout needs
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout replied to Duewel stating, “While the Municipality is not at liberty to disclose other details at this time, to the best of our knowledge, the facility will continue to be used for childcare services, but it will not be operated by the Municipality.”
The Norah Love Children’s Centre was named after local pioneer in the provision of kindergarten programming in Sioux Lookout, Norah Love. Mrs. Love opened Sioux Lookout’s first kindergarten in her home in 1957 and later moved to the basement of the Catholic Church, and, finally, to Sacred Heart School. The facility was named in her honour 35 years ago.
