Municipal Environment Committee recognizes Chamber of Commerce

The Sioux Lookout Municipal Environment Committee took to Facebook on Sept. 28 to recognize the Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce for encouraging environmental awareness and stewardship by sponsoring the Northwest Farmer’s Markets.
“The markets are a great opportunity for the Chamber to not only promote local businesses and vendors but to also promote environmental awareness and sustainable food options,” said Kelsey Raynard, who is the Chamber of Commerce executive assistant.
“Being recognized reminded the board of the benefits that come along with hosting markets in addition to the business benefits of having these vendors come to our community,” she continued.
Anne Saltel, who is a member of the Sioux Lookout Municipal Environment Committee, shared that it’s encouraging to have opportunities to buy local food and wares and support local businesses and vendors.
“With the farmer’s markets, it gives Sioux Lookout and the surrounding area an opportunity to buy locally sourced food, and I think that is really important. One of our mandates is to support food security and the markets heighten our awareness to the fact that we can grow a lot of food in northwestern Ontario,” she explained.
This isn’t the first time the Municipal Environment Committee has recognized a local business, organization, or resident. Most recently, on Aug. 24, the committee acknowledged Nancy Roy and the Roy Lane staff because of their efforts to eliminate the use of plastic straws. Saltel said that the committee gets good feedback from those who are recognized and the community as well.
“On Facebook we get really good feedback. We’ve had hundreds of likes on our past acknowledgements of local businesses and organizations,” she concluded.
If you know of an organization or individual that is exemplifying the promotion of environmental education and/or undertaking good environmental stewardship, the Municipal Environment Committee would be happy to recognize their efforts. Please email Anne Saltel: firstname.lastname@example.org.
