Memories & Celebrations of Life
Obituary - Michael George Van Voris
November 13, 1962 - November 20, 2018
It is with the heaviest of hearts we wish to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and friend Michael George Van Voris. Michael passed away November 20, 2018 following a valiant battle with cancer. Michael was predeceased by his brother Daniel and is survived by his parents Donna Roy and George Van Voris, loving wife of 25 years Emily Van Voris, daughter Michelle Turner (Matthew), sons Tyler and Dylan Van Voris, grandsons Ethan and Luke Turner, and numerous family and friends. Michael was born in Thompson, MB and grew up in Thunder Bay, ON before relocating to Hudson ON in 2000. He always said his life was incomplete until he fell in love with his soulmate Emily. Michael and Emily were married in 1993 and showed the world what it looked like to be so completely in love; every single day. Michael did various odd jobs until he found his true calling in life: making a difference in the lives of children. Whether it be as a foster parent, house councillor at Pelican Falls, residential care worker at Tikinagan Child and Family Services, and most especially as a FahJah/Gampy; Michael always found it so easy to connect with and support children. He may only have had three of his own children but he was like a father to many. Jokingly referred to as Small-Talk Elevator Mike, Mr. Van Voris will be remembered for his ability to meet, make friends with, and lend a hand to anybody and everybody (often even taking hours to run small errands due to all his friendly chatter). Michael’s sense of humour was one of his best qualities and if you knew him, you surely had shared a laugh (or a drink) with him. Mike was just one of those people who just brightened people’s days. A man of supreme character, Michael Van Voris set the standard for what it means to be a wonderful husband, an unparalleled father, and a fun-loving, dependable friend. He was loved greatly and will be missed forever. The family would like to take the time to thank all our friends and family for the kind thoughts, visits, and support over the past few difficult months; we have never been prouder to be a part of the communities of Hudson and Sioux Lookout. To the organization and staff at Tikinagan: the impact your kindness and generosity has had on our family cannot be measured and there are no words for our gratitude. Thank you to the medical staff at TBRHSC Cancer Care for being both caring and fierce allies in Mike’s fight. Thank you to doctors A. Morgan and A. Jakabow for your support during Michael’s palliation at home and thanks most especially to Dr. L. Laakso who supported Michael from his diagnosis to his death. Dr. Laakso’s care and compassion continuously went above and beyond the call of duty and will be forever remembered and appreciated. Thank you to NP Leah Habinski and Home and Community Care staff for helping us keep Michael safe and comfortable at home as per his wishes. A Celebration of Life for Michael will be held in Hudson, ON at the Hudson Hall on 23.11.18 from 1700 to 2000 and in Thunder Bay, ON at the Hampton Inn and Suites on 01.12.2018 from 1200 to 1500. For those of you who can make it: we thank you in advance for your presence; and for those of you who cannot: raise a glass in Michael’s honor sometime…he would have appreciated that too. Any charitable donations can be made out to the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Heath Center Foundation or Cancer Care Ontario through the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home. Michael, rest in peace knowing you leave behind you so many wonderful memories and a truly timeless legacy of love.
