Obituary - Alfred Kartinen
February 9, 1945 - September 11, 2018
Alfred Kartinen passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 11, 2018, at the Meno Ya Win Health Centre in Sioux Lookout with his family by his side. Alfred was 73, he was born in 1945 in Eriksdale, Manitoba.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Donna; their three children Darrell (wife Tena), Karen (husband Allan) and Michelle (husband Jason); six grandchildren Chelsea, Mitchell, Aaron, Todd, Alexandria and Isabella; two sisters, Gloria and Holly (husband Jack); three brothers, Melvin (wife Lena), Robin (wife Gerry), and Rick (wife Linda); along with numerous nieces and nephews. Alfred was predeceased by his mother Mary, father Fred, brother Rodney, nephew Matthew and beloved brother-in-law, Dennis Conger (husband of Gloria).
Alfred was born a farmer but later became an avid fisherman and jack of all trades. He moved his family to Sioux Lookout in 1967 after purchasing Ghost River Camp, a hunting and fishing tourist business which he and Donna operated until their retirement. One of his greatest accomplishments was when he earned his pilots license and making his first solo flight on March 5, 1999. Alfred purchased his airplane shortly thereafter. Alfred loved to travel, he and Donna enjoyed their retirement years first in Florida and then Mexico.
The family would like to thank the Chemo Therapy Unit, doctors and nursing staff at the hospital, Home Health Care, Dr. Sicheri, and Dr. Hagerty for the amazing care during Alfred’s illness.
A Celebration of Life for Alfred took place on September 15, 2018 at the Sioux Lookout Legion where friends and family gathered and shared numerous memories and stories of Alfred’s life.
