Letter to the Editor:
Updating Hub transit
Sioux Lookout Handi Transit is transitioning into an all-inclusive community transit service. The service was originally established to provide “on-call” transportation to seniors and persons living with disabilities. The service has operated three days per week for the past several years, providing necessary transportation to nearly 4000 riders last year.
Over the last few months and at a special planning session held on March 29, the Handi Transit Board and community members reviewed the current service and provided ideas on how to expand and make the service more convenient and inclusive to all citizens of the municipality.
The discussions determined that there is a growing need to provide a more regular, all-inclusive transportation service for Sioux Lookout’s residents.
With a newer, larger bus and the expanded service schedule the operating name will become Hub transit, to complement the municipality’s “Hub of the North” branding and to reflect the future goal of the service.
Hub transit will continue to operate as a not-for-profit entity, overseen by a volunteer board with input from community members.
Starting immediately the bus service will operate on the Monday, Thursday, Friday schedule from 8:00 am until 4:30 p.m. but will now also offer transport on a “flag-down” as well as “on-call” basis to anyone wishing to ride, however persons with disabilities and seniors will be given priority.
The fare remains at $4 for adults, $8 rural rate (past the Pelican River bridge) children under 10 are $2 if accompanied by an adult.
Starting June 5 the bus will operate Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the same “flag-down” and “on-call” basis.
Over the coming months we will be experimenting with establishing a more scheduled service to further enhance the rider experience, with the goal of providing a regularly scheduled service route throughout the municipality by year’s end.
The Hub transit board of directors will continually be exploring ways to improve service and will need your support and ideas to help it grow to become an economical, dependable bus service that will augment Sioux Lookout’s progressive strategic plan to grow the municipality by investing within.
Watch for the new bus (it will be very visible) and get on board!!
John Bath, Chairperson, Hub transit
P.S. The Handi Transit board of directors will be holding the Annual General Meeting on May 25, 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Sioux Towers common room. The 2017/18 slate of officers and board members will be appointed at this meeting. Since Hub transit is run by a volunteer board there is always a need for individuals to step forward to serve on the board. If you feel you have a talent we can utilize we would appreciate your input. We welcome your attendance and participation at the meeting whether we are able to recruit you or not.
