International Women’s Day

For the first time, the First Step Women’s Shelter celebrated Sioux Lookouts’ women of inspiration at an awards luncheon March 8. The celebration was part of International Women’s Day, and it took place at the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre.
The First Step Women’s Shelter received award nominations for many local women who inspire people daily, and the shelter stressed the importance of recognizing everyone that was nominated.
“We didn’t want to have awards that only recognize a few people based on a voting system. Each woman is inspiring in their own way regardless of their occupation or living situation, which is why we wanted everyone who was nominated to be recognized as women of inspiration,” said First Step Women’s Shelter Executive Director Tana Troniak.
The luncheon had a good attendance, and it provided the women an opportunity to talk about future events. Tana Troniak said their goal for the future is to get as many women involved as possible.
“Not only do we want to have more local women involved, but we want local men and youth to get involved as well, especially when we’re out in the public doing stuff like marches and fundraisers,” Troniak mentioned. “Our plan for the coming year is to do more events to try and get more women out and involved because every woman in this community has an opportunity to inspire and empower someone else.”
