Hub Transit starts eight-week trial with earlier hours

As of August 21, Hub Transit has been in the midst of an eight-week trial with changes to their hours of operation. Hub Transit will be starting their daily routes at 7 a.m., and they’re trying to determine if this meets the needs of their riders.
“We’ve been talking about it for quite a while trying to pick up people who are going to work and coming back from work. In some cases we’re even accommodating kids that are trying to get to school. That was one of the weaknesses of our schedule,” said Hub Transit Chair John Bath.
The trial hours are just one hour earlier than usual but, just over three weeks in to the trial, Bath is seeing an increase in ridership.
“We’re seeing an increase, per week, of about 26 per cent. Prior to doing this, we had around 130 riders per week and now we’re over 160,” he said.
Bath explained that the goal moving forward is to eventually have a 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. bus schedule with the hope of an added weekend schedule. As of right now, the success of the extended morning hour’s trial could bring in another trial extending the evening hours to 7 p.m.
“Once we see that this is working, with starting at seven in the morning, we’ll probably try to extend it on the back end of the day and have a trial with hours running from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. I think it would be a natural thing to do,” Bath concluded.
Brochures with the route map, fare information, and Hub Transit rules are available at the Municipal offices, Travel Information Centre, Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena, and the Sioux Lookout Hostel.
