Family Fun Night hosted by SMPS

Sioux Mountain Public School hosted a family fun night February 27. The gym had different stations set up with various educational games organized by teachers.
“In the past, we haven’t done a fun night. We’ve done more of a literacy night, and this year we combined it more with activities,” said literacy intervention teacher Tracey Donnelly. “Before, we used to do it during literacy week in February, so we changed it this year.”
They also had door and raffle prizes, a chili dinner, and face painting set up in the gym. It was a good chance for students and parents to interact with the teachers outside of the classroom.
“It’s a great community building opportunity for the teachers to have fun with the kids, meet the parents, and to just have a good time,” Donnelly mentioned.
Fifth grade teacher Jamie Searle said it’s important to have plenty of parents and students come out to these events, and that there’s a direct effect between the parent interaction and the school environment.
“The more kids and parents you have interacting within the school, the better overall school atmosphere you see. When you get parents coming out to events like this, they’re more active in their child’s learning, and it’s huge for the whole community.”
