Out of the Cold Shelter seeking soup donations

Due to an increased number of users this winter, Sioux Lookout’s Out of the Cold Shelter is asking for additional soup donations.
“We have had a lot of people in the shelter, more so than we’ve had in other years. Our numbers are up by a good 10 per cent right now. We always need soup from time to time, but we have been overwhelmed since before Christmas with the number of folks that are using our services,” shelter executive director Susan Barclay shared.
“We’re just letting people know if you’ve got a pot of soup going, we’d be glad to have it. Our regular donors have been fantastic,” she added.
“We are now up to 26 (sleeping) mats. We were at 17, 18, but we’ve done some reorganizing of space and we can right now accommodate 26 on mats… We have been, since November, pretty much at capacity and actually overflow.”
Barclay said the shelter has regularly been seeing 15 to 20 people a night since late November.
Barclay said the shelter will take any donations of soup people are willing to share, but added homemade soup is preferred.
If people wish to make a donation, but need a container, Barclay said people can pick one up from the shelter at 25 Fair Street.
Asked when people should drop off donations of soup she said, “There’s somebody in the shelter 24/7 so they can stop by any time.”
“We serve about eight litres (of soup) a night,” she explained.
“We can always use community volunteers. Any time people have got a few hours either in the evening between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., or over the lunch hour now because we’re serving a fair crowd at lunch,” she concluded.
Anyone with questions about soup donations, or who might be interested in volunteering at the shelter, can contact Barclay or her staff at 807-737-7499.
