Community members explore free health expo

Community members had a chance to learn tips for healthy living during a free health expo, which was hosted by the Sioux Lookout Seventh-Day Adventist Church, on Sept. 1.
The expo featured a bouncy castle, soup and sandwiches that were courtesy of Vegan Delights, and health professionals set up at stations for participants to learn about natural health options.
“It was a display of what they call the eight laws of health or the eight natural doctors under the acronym N.E.W.S.T.A.R.T., which is nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, temperance, air, rest, and trust,” said Garth Geddes, First Elder with the Sioux Lookout Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
“At each station there were professionals there that started with basic check-ups and your weight, your height, your body mass index pretty much. After doing the initial test, individuals at each station would give tips as to how to maximize these natural options that are available to everyone. For instance at the exercise booth, they would not only receive information as to how to, but they would do basic exercise… It was free to the community. Anybody could walk in,” he added.
The health professionals that were accessible throughout the expo were physicians and nurses from Sioux Lookout and Winnipeg.
“They were physicians and nurses both from Sioux Lookout and Winnipeg, and they’re affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. We have a local Seventh-Day Adventist Church group that’s here in town, and we were the ones who sponsored and hosted the program, but we had assistance from the Silver Heights Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Winnipeg who came over,” said Geddes.
Geddes shared that the Sioux Lookout Seventh-Day Adventist Church is hoping to host more health-related events in the future.
“This was somewhat of a pilot project. We hope to carry out more of these health-related projects in the future. Overall, it was a successful day for us,” he said.
