Sioux Lookout and area residents are invited to apply for a program aimed at helping Ontario residents lower their electricity use and costs at home over the long term.
The AffordAbility Fund Program is funded by an independent trust set up by the Government of Ontario and offered to residential hydro customers by their local electric utility and community services.
Program applicants may qualify for free upgrades, including ENERGY Star certified LEDS, ENERGY Star certified appliances or even insulation and weatherstripping.
The program offers three levels of support.
At level one hydro customers receive a Home Energy Kit with upgrades that can be easily installed. This may include ENERGY STAR® light bulbs, a power bar and/or faucet aerators along with energy-saving tips.
At level two hydro customers receive an in-home visit from a professional Home Energy Advisor, a Home Energy Plan and upgrades that may include ENERGY STAR® appliances.
At level three, for electrically heated homes only, hydro customers receive an in-home visit from a professional Home Energy Advisor, a Home Energy Plan and upgrades that may include insulation and/or an ENERGY STAR® heat pump.
Residential home owners and tenants can apply for the Affordability Fund Program by calling 1-855-494-3863 or visiting www.affordabilityfund.org.
People can also apply for someone they know such as a parent, grandparent or friend.
“Whether residents rent or own, or live in a house or an apartment, they can be eligible for the AffordAbility Fund Program. The level that they qualify for depends on net income and average energy bill. Those that are eligible for the AffordAbility Fund Program do not have to pay for the upgrades or installation with the program offered free of charge,” a news release issued by Sioux Lookout Hydro explained.
“Sioux Lookout Hydro is committed to expand our thinking about how energy efficiency can be deployed and increase residential home energy efficiency. The AffordAbility Fund Program is about increasing support and ensuring opportunities are available for our customers to save on their electricity bills through energy efficiency,” stated Deanne Kulchyski, of Sioux Lookout Hydro. “When you save energy you save money, and you may see the comfort, health, and value of your home increase. Energy efficiency is a great resource. It delivers many societal benefits such as energy savings, improved health and safety, community revitalization and enhanced energy reliability.”
“Older households lack adequate insulation and usually have dated and less energy efficient appliances. Small changes through the AffordAbility Fund Program can make a big difference. A program like this can be really transformative for a community. The AffordAbility Fund Program provides vital support for people that need it the most, and delivers many societal benefits such as energy savings, improved health and safety, community revitalization and enhanced energy reliability,” Kulchyski concluded.
